Backups to Hetzner Object Storage

Store launchroom's encrypted backups in Hetzner Object Storage, ideally in a different location than your servers.

Hetzner Object Storage is S3-compatible and available in fsn1, nbg1 and hel1, next to Hetzner's servers. launchroom encrypts everything with restic on your servers before upload, so the bucket stores only encrypted data.

Set up the bucket

Create a bucket

In the Hetzner Console, open your project → Object Storage → Create bucket. Pick a location and a name, for example launchroom-backups-acme (bucket names are global), and set visibility to private.

Generate S3 credentials

Open Security → S3 credentials → Generate credentials. Copy the access key and secret key. The secret is shown once.

Credentials belong to the Hetzner project and can access all of its buckets. To limit access, use a dedicated Hetzner project for backups.

Find your endpoint

The endpoint is https://<location>.your-objectstorage.com, for example:

https://fsn1.your-objectstorage.com

Add the destination in launchroom

Open Settings → Backups → Add destination, choose Hetzner as the storage provider, and fill in:

FieldValue
NameHetzner fsn1
Endpointhttps://fsn1.your-objectstorage.com
Bucketlaunchroom-backups-acme
Regionfsn1 (the location)
Folder (optional)for example team-acme
Access key ID, Secret access keyFrom step 2

Save. launchroom tests the destination right away and shows "Connected". Daily database backups start at a staggered time between 01:00 and 07:00 UTC.

Pick a different location

Store backups in a location other than your servers' data center when you can, for example servers in fsn1 and storage in hel1. Then a backup survives the loss of the site it protects.

Back up launchroom itself

If you are an instance owner, use a separate bucket or folder for the control plane in the Back up launchroom itself section, then set the recovery passphrase and download the recovery kit. See backing up launchroom itself.
